How to choose a restaurant near the Colosseum

The area around the Colosseum is one of the busiest in Rome, and the places facing the square often sell the view more than the food. Walk for just a few minutes, though, and you will find trattorias and restaurants where Romans eat too.

A few practical tips: be wary of fixed-price tourist menus displayed with photos, check that every dish on the menu has a price, and look for the classics of Roman cooking made the traditional way. A good sign is a menu that changes with the seasons and marks frozen products with an asterisk, as Italian law requires.

Volare: 300 metres from the Colosseum, since 1977

Ristorante Pizzeria Volare is at Via di San Giovanni in Laterano 48, the street that runs from the Colosseum to the Basilica of St. John Lateran: just 300 metres, a 4-5 minute walk from the amphitheatre, and the Colosseum is in view from our outdoor tables. Along the same street you will pass the Ludus Magnus, the gladiators' training school, and the Basilica of San Clemente.

Since 1977 we have been serving two traditions: Sardinian cuisine, where our family comes from, and Roman cuisine, together with pizza. We are open every day, from 12:00 to 23:00, for lunch and dinner.

What to order after your visit

For a quick lunch between sights: a pizza (Margherita is €9), a salad such as our Caesar Volare, or a Roman pasta like tonnarelli cacio e pepe or spaghetti carbonara.

For a relaxed dinner: start with mixed Sardinian cheeses or Roman-style artichokes, continue with culurgiones or fregola with clams, then porceddu, roast suckling pig with potatoes, and finish with seadas and honey. The full menu with all prices is here.
